Biography

Julian Guidetti is composer, music producer and multi-instrumentalist known for the musical and sonic versatility of his diverse and richly cinematic soundtracks. Marrying traditional film scoring techniques with vibrant and often unique musical imagery, his work displays a keen ear for the experimental and avant-garde while holding the audience experience at its heart.

Julian most recently contributed music to BBC Studios' documentary series Shakespeare: Rise Of A Genius - the centrepiece to the BBC's Shakespeare Season - and to eight-part limited series The Full Monty, written by Simon Beaufoy and Alice Nutter and featuring the original cast from the BAFTA award-winning 1997 film.

In 2022 he composed the soundtrack to Netflix’s ground-breaking animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, based on the Eisner Award-winning graphic novels by Hamish Steele and starring Emily Osment and Alex Brightman. Dead End was included in The New York Times’ ‘Best 50 Shows On Netflix Right Now’ in Summer 2022 and appeared in many reviewers’ year-end lists of the best animated shows of 2022.

Julian has scored a number of documentaries such as two-part ITV primetime special Yorkshire Ripper: The Secret Murders, directed by Adam Luria, investigating the legacy of notorious serial killer Peter Sutcliffe. Other titles include Ancient Skies, The Woman In The Iron Coffin and, more recently, The Cambridgeshire Crucifixion and Herculaneum Unwrapped.

His short-form work spans the hybrid live-action/animated short Macbeth Act I Scene V, directed by the Grammy-nominated David Wilson and starring BAFTA winner Vicky McClure, to animated short Werebeast, directed by James Lancett. Away from the mediums of film and TV, in 2017 Julian scored WYE, a multi-channel art installation created by Deutsche Borse Prize-winning Magnum Photographer Mikhael Subotzky. A rich variety of sonic techniques both old and new was used in soundtracking a unique set of three films which explore South Africa’s history, identity and racial heritage; the installation has toured internationally.

A frequent collaborator with other composers, Julian provided string arrangements for RTS-awarded composer Oli Julian’s scores for Netflix comedy series The Duchess and the feature film How To Build A Girl, directed by Coky Giedroyc and winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019. In addition, he has worked closely with composer and three-time BAFTA winner Nick Foster, most recently on the international thriller White Widow starring Adelaide Clemens and Saffron Burrows.

Julian originally cut his teeth writing bespoke music for advertising and continues to score international campaigns for global brands such as Apple TV, Amazon, Range Rover, Ford, IKEA, Jaguar and many more. During his early career he also helped develop the soundtracks of a handful of feature films, most notably for Jonathan Glazer’s critically lauded and multi-award winning Under The Skin, starring Scarlett Johansson.
